ECE Faculty-Undergraduate Mentoring Program

Who is My Mentor? - How to Find out Who is Assigned as Your Mentor

ECE's Office of Undergraduate Studies assigns faculty mentors to each and every student majoring in either electrical or computer engineering. Computer engineering students are assigned faculty specializing in that area. Electrical engineering students may be assigned to any ECE faculty member. All returning ECE students should already have been assigned and met with their mentor. Thus, they should know who their mentor is. There are three groups of students who may not know who their mentor is and a fourth group of students who already have faculty mentors assigned through other programs.

  1. First semester freshman
  2. New transfer students
  3. Students new to the major
  4. Students in Inventis, Gemstone, Hinman CEO, or other special programs

First semester freshman and new transfer students will be assigned a mentor around 3-4 weeks after the beginning of the semester. Theses students will receive notification from the Undergraduate Office indicating who their mentor is as well as their contact information. Make sure you check your email thoroughly for this notification. A letter will also be sent through the regular post.

Once students have been assigned, the relevant faculty member is notified whereupon they will contact their mentees. This initial contact will most likely take the form of a group email with general guidelines on how they intend to handle their mentoring appointments. However, if you have not heard from your faculty mentor prior to the end of the fifth week of the semester then you should take the initiative and contact them via email. If you have not been assigned a mentor or do not know who your mentor is by the end fo the fifth week of semester then contact the Undergraduate Office (301-405-3685) for instructions.

If you are already working closely with a faculty member you may request them as your official mentor. Indeed, if you participate in Inventis, Gemstone, Hinman CEOs, or other special program you may already have an assigned faculty mentor in which case you should inform us immediately so we can make that person your official mentor. Even if you are in this last group of students, you will still be required to have the mentoring checklist completed and returned before being allowed to register.
